He was 34 years old at the time of his death.. He died on June 1, 1970 in Quang Nam Province. He was the aircraft commander of a CH-46D which crashed on land due to hostile causes. He was participating in a recon insert when a team member stepped on a booby-trap in the zone, causing sever damage to the aircraft which then crashed in the zone, resulting in Fitzgeralds death and minor injuries to his crew. His body was recovered. He was married. His religion was Roman Catholic. His race is officially listed as Caucasian. He had twelve year’s service at the time of his death.
